Church of St Nicolino

11th-17th century

Dedicated to St Nicolino, known as St Nicholas the Pilgrim, it embodies the spirit of the “fools for Christ”. These individuals, following an unconventional spiritual path, manifested a special devotion to God, often at odds with social norms. While appearing unusual to the outside world, they were regarded as figures endowed with a deep and genuine spirituality. Originally from Styria in Greece, Nicholas undertook a pilgrimage to Rome. Arriving in Trani on the 20th of May 1094, Archbishop Byzantium I allowed him to stay. Shortly afterwards, he fell ill and on June 2nd, at the age of 19, ascended to Heaven. In 1099 he was canonised by Pope Urban II. The place where Nicholas spent his last days, previously a stable of a farmer named Sabinus, was converted into a church. Today it has an ashlar façade dating back to the 17th century.
