In the heart of this ancient city, the Cathedral Basilica emerges as a shining light of spirituality and tradition. Described as the queen of Apulia's cathedrals, it represents one of the highest expressions of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Its architecture, composed of local stone, displays a chromatic play that changes according to the daylight, while its bell tower, rising proudly, seems to want to touch the sky. Not far away, the imposing presence of the castle is felt ordered by Frederick II of Swabia. The Cathedral and castle face each other, representing the eternal conflict between the spiritual and temporal powers. A stone's throw away, we find the 16th century Torres Palace, which today houses the central section of the Trani Court, demonstrating the city's long and prestigious legal tradition. In the early 11th century, Trani was endowed with the “Ordinamenta Maris”, considered the oldest code of navigation in the Mediterranean. In the 13th century, Frederick II established the courts in Trani, further strengthening the city's legal reputation. In the 15th century, the figure of Giustina Rocca emerged, the first woman to practice law in the world, now honored at the Court of Justice of the European Union. Finally, in 1586, the Sacra Regia Udienza of the province of Terra di Bari was established in Trani in the castle, giving the city the title of provincial capital. Even today, historic buildings in the area house several sections of Trani's courts, continuing the city's long legal tradition, including the Candido Palace now home to the Civil Section of the Court. In Piazza Duomo, Lodispoto Palace is home to the Trani Diocesan Museum Complex - Museum of the Writing Machine - Seca Foundation, further enriching the cultural and historical heritage presence. A short distance away is the 18th century Valenzano Palace, home to the State Archives, and the Filisio Palace. From Piazza Duomo, a strategic point, you have several choices: you can take Via Beltrani through the ancient city, go to via La Giudea to visit the Jewish quarter or go down towards the port basin.
