Port Area

At the entrance to the port, the tower of Santa Lucia evokes echoes of a distant past. A short distance away, the 17th century Palazzo Gadaleta houses the 12th century Romanesque church of Santa Lucia, currently used as the seat of the judicial offices. Opposite from here is Palmieri Palace which houses the municipal council. These monuments include the Piazza Sacra Regia Udienza with the majestic 18th century Valenzano Palace housing the State Archives. Not far away, the Cathedral Basilica represents an oasis of peace amidst the lively urban history, inviting you to experience a moment of spiritual reflection and to discover one of the most significant examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Exploring the street to the left, you will discover the opulent palace built in the 15th century by merchant Simone Caccetta. The building housed the Venetian governors between 1495 and 1509, representing a shining example of the Apulian Renaissance. Arriving in Piazza Sedile San Marco, one's attention is immediately captured by the Baroque church of Santa Teresa, an 18th century masterpiece of the Carmelitani Scalzi, renowned for its profound worship and devotion to the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows. The square is further embellished by the Sifola and Laghezza Palaces and, on the slope of Via Prologo, the 18th century Bianchi Palace. Conclude your tour with a visit to the Church of All Saints and the adjoining Templar Hospital, places full of mystery and legends about the Templar presence in the city. A short distance away, the ancient street of the money changers will lead you directly to the historic Porta Antica, introducing you to the Lombard city.
