St Theresa Church

18th century

Erected in 1764 by the Discalced Carmelites, who had moved into the nearby Caccetta Palace, the church preserves a deep spiritual tradition. The façade, in the lower order, features a pronaos surmounted by windows; in the upper order, the statue of St Theresa of Avila by G. Bassi. The pictorial cycle is related to the Carmelite world; paintings by Giovan B. Calò from the 18th century stand out. The Archconfraternity of the Our Lady of Sorrows has had its seat here since 1808. In addition to presiding at services, the Archconfraternity is dedicated to the care of the temple and to spreading the cult of Our Lady of Sorrows. A moment of profound devotion is the historical Procession of Penance, which takes place at three o'clock in the morning on Good Friday and sees the intense participation of the people. The Fraternity of the Secular Order of the Servants of Mary is also present, contributing to the religious traditions.
