St. John Lionel Church

15th century

Originally built in 1477, it was completely restored during 1780-1791. Its construction was connected to the foundation of the Convent, desired by Antonella Palagano. It was founded as the House of the Religious of the Third Order of Penitents and later as the Second Order of Poor Clares. It is named after San Giovanni and Lionelli, the former in reference to the ancient church of San Giovanni, and Lionelli for the name of Antonella Palagano's husband, Lionello Falconario. The polychrome marble altars, consecrated together with the high altar in 1782 by Abbess Sister Marianna Campitelli, are of great interest. The paintings by Nicola Menzele, Filippo Falciatore's 'Baptism of Christ' from 1768 and works by Giambattista Calò are of great taste.
