18th century
Built in 1762 by Andrea Valenzano, a wealthy merchant from Rutigliano, the palace passed to Saverio Valenzano in 1773 and became the seat, under lease, of the Sacra Regia Udienza. In 1790, it was purchased by the Bourbon government. In 1799, 14 inmates were killed by the fierce mob of Royalists with the intention of appropriating money and property. The building was the site of the criminal prison until 1812. In 1855 it was used as a prison, and in 1856 it became the seat of the archives of the Tribunal and the Chamber of Notaries. Inside is the fresco of the Pieta, painted by a condemned man. Today, the building houses the District Notarial Archive and the State Archive Section.
