Old Town Area

Ferdinando Lambert Square, once called Sedile of Portanova Square, has been the vibrant heart of Trani for centuries. Thanks to the Swabian expansion, it established itself as the pulsating centre of city life until the early 20th century. In the 15th century, the Palagano family built a palace entirely of stone, recognised as the oldest existing Renaissance palace and the first example of a “palazziata house”. Over the centuries, this building passed to the Festa family and, in the 19th century, to the Lambert family. Next to it is the 17th century Moselli Palace, formerly Maggiolla, which was once the seat of the Sedile dei Nobili di Portanova. In the 18th century, there was the Church of St Lawrence, later renamed St Louis, now converted into an auditorium. Behind, along Via Nigrò, is the church of St Clare, famous for its important archaeological excavations. The green Mazzini Square, built in the early 20th century, houses the imposing Gattola Mondelli Palace, restored in the same period. From Lambert Square, cross via Dogana Vecchia to reach the Civic Tower or Clock Tower, where the city's ancient coat of arms is imprinted. Next to it stands the Church of St Donato, rebuilt in the 19th century. Continuing along via Romito, one comes across the Romanesque church of St Mary de Russis, known as St James, distinguished by its anthropomorphic sculptures forming a peculiar stone calendar. A short distance away are the birthplace of philosopher and politician Giovanni Bovio, the 18th century Palazzo Sarlo and the church dedicated to St. Augustine rebuilt in the 18th century. Via Beltrani, emanating from Lambert Square, is the main street of the old town. Along this street, splendid aristocratic palaces, originally founded in the Middle Ages but reconstructed or extended between the 17th and 18th centuries, display their magnificence. Notable is the building of the Beltrani family, now home to the "Beltrani" Palace of Arts; opposite the Morola Palace. A little further on is the Carcano Palace, formerly De Luca XVIII; then the ancient church of St John Lionel, rebuilt in the late 18th century and linked to a monastery founded in the 15th century by the Palagano family. Via San Martino is home to a precious church of the same name, dating back to the Longobard period, a special and evocative sacred place that is located on the floor where the Romanian Orthodox community now celebrates its liturgies. The Broquier D'Amely Palace stands out for its deep roots, with family histories dating back to the 15th century, fronted by the 17th century Carcano Palace, and the adjoining Surdo-Bonismiro Palace. Other notable palaces include the Rogadeo Palace, better known as the Archbishop's Palace, known for its imposing medieval tower, which may have been part of a Norman fortification; the 17th century Candido Palace, formerly Lanza, now home to the civil court; and the majestic Torres Palace, now joined with the Petagna-Vischi Palace, houses the headquarters of the court.
