17th century
Since the 12th century, this area had been home to the preceptory of the Hierosolimitan Order and the adjoining church of S. Giovanni della Penna. In 1549, the Carmelites acquired the area, building the convent and, in the 17th century, a new sacred building dedicated to the B.V. of Carmel. The remodelled façade houses statues of St Peter and St Paul. The bell tower was erected in 1863. The Carmelites officiated here until 1809, since 1929 the place has been cared for by the Barnabite Fathers. Noteworthy is the adjacent portal of the former Carmelite convent. Inside are valuable works of art, including the 13th century icon of the Our Lady of the Fountain. Legend has it that this icon, set in a spring, arrived in Trani in 1234, carried by a dolphin. The paintings by Francesco Marchese (17th century) and Nicola Menzele (18th century) are remarkable. It has been a Diocesan Sanctuary since 1974.
