Ancient gate

9th century

The ancient Longobard city walls had three main entrances: Porta Vetere in the direction of Barletta, Porta Vassalla a short distance from today's Cathedral and Porta Aurea. Later, Porta Nova was built, aligned with the Basilica. We are now at Porta Aurea, often also called "Antica". Connected to the port, it provided direct access to the Jewish quarter. Although it has undergone changes over time, it retains traces of its past, such as the remains of the hinges. Here, the deep devotional tradition of setting up votive aedicules emerges, with a particular tribute to the patron saint in the main arch.
